19-Year Old Kenyan Becomes Third Fastest Runner in 800m

Kenyan teenager Emmanuel Wanyonyi became the third-fastest man ever in the 800 meters, running the fastest time since 2012 at the Kenyan Athletics Olympics Trials in Nairobi on Saturday. Wanyonyi had almost failed to make the finals, as he had tripped and fell during the previous day’s semi-finals. However, he picked himself up and dusted Saturday’s trials clocking 1:41.70. This puts him as the third-fastest man to ever run the 800 meters, behind another Kenyan, the two-time Olympic champion, David Rudisha and Denmark’s Wilson Kipketer. Sprinter Ferdinand Omanyala also qualified for the Paris games, setting a world-leading time of 9.79 seconds in the men’s 100 meters. Middle- and long-distance runner Faith Kipyegon, a double Olympic champion, won both the 1,500m and 5,000m races at the trials. The athletics competition at the Olympics will be held in Paris from August 1-11.
