40 African Cities Feature on the 2021 Cost of Living City Ranking List

The city of Lagos, Nigeria, has been ranked as the second-most expensive city for expatriates surveyed in Africa and among the top 20 globally, according to the Mercer 2021 Cost of Living City Ranking. In all, 40 African cities feature on the list. After N’Djamena, Lagos (Nigeria) is ranked 19th, Libreville (Gabon) 20th, Abidjan (Côte d’Ivoire) 24th, and Bangui (Central African Republic) 30th. The ranking, which helps employers navigate expatriate compensation, used New York City as the base city, and currency movements were measured against the US dollar. Lusaka (Zambia), the cheapest city in Africa, has been experiencing major economic challenges, including its local currency depreciation (Kwacha) by close to 47%. High inflation and tight liquidity are also factors that have made Lusaka a more attractive destination for expatriate in 2021.
