Cameroon President’s Daughter Hopes Coming Out Will Inspire Review of Anti-gay Laws

Brenda Biya, daughter of Cameroon’s President Paul Biya, who recently came out as lesbian has expressed hopes that her decision will inspire changes to the country’s laws that ban homosexuality. Brenda expressed these hopes during a recent interview with Le Parisien where she shared her aim to offer hope and support to those suffering as a result of their sexual orientation in Cameroon. She expressed her desire for legislative change, starting with the removal of prison sentences. The West African country frowns deeply on same-sex relationships and stipulates up to five years in prison for homosexuals. Brenda, who came out via an Instagram post on June 30, also revealed she had not come out to her family before her public announcement. Her father has not publicly commented on her coming out.
