Sudan’s Burhan Pulls Out of Ceasefire Talks Following Assassination Attempt

Sudan’s military leader, Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan, survived a drone attack on an army graduation ceremony in Gebeit on Wednesday, which killed five people. According to the military, the two drones struck after the ceremony ended, but Burhan was unharmed. Videos of the incident showed people fleeing the site during the drone attack. A Facebook video later showed Burhan smiling as a crowd cheered him on. Following the attack, the military accused Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group it has warred against since 2021, of being behind the assassination attempt, despite the RSF’s denials. Burhan has also stated that the military is no longer interested in attending ceasefire talks scheduled to take place in Switzerland this August.
