Tunisia’s Migrant Abuses Under Scrutiny as EU Migration Pact Faces Backlash

A recent UN report has condemned Tunisia for committing severe human rights violations against migrants, particularly during sea interceptions. According to the report, nearly 190 migrants, including children, died while crossing the Mediterranean, and over 260 more died during interception operations, all between January and July 2023. It highlighted mistreatment, including physical violence, capsizing boats, and enforced disappearances, at the hands of Tunisian authorities. On Tunisian soil, migrants, particularly those from sub-Saharan Africa, are reportedly subjected to abuse. Tunisian authorities allegedly round up refugees and asylum seekers, who they then transport to the desert areas bordering Algeria and Libya. If these migrants attempt to return, they are fired at by border guards. Given these allegations, the experts behind the report criticized the fact that EU countries still consider Tunisia a safe country of origin. The EU-Tunisia migration pact, which provides Tunisia with financial aid for border security, has faced criticism for contributing to these violations.
