Wits University is set to inaugurate its first artificial intelligence institute this week. The institute, known as the Machine Intelligence and Neural Discovery (MIND) Institute, is dedicated to advancing AI across Africa. With an initial investment of $3.3 million, MIND aims to foster AI research, develop local talent, and shape ethical AI policies. The program, set to begin on November 19, will welcome 34 research fellows selected in October. The initiative includes training Masters, PhD, and Post-Doctoral students. Beyond that, Wits University is working with other universities across the continent to create a pan-African MIND fellowship beginning in 2025. The MIND Institute, conceptualized in 2017, highlights Africa’s growing AI potential, estimated to boost GDP by $1.5 trillion by 2030. Despite this, challenges remain, including digital skills gaps and inadequate policy frameworks, underscoring the importance of cultivating AI talent and innovation on the continent.
