The Museum of West African Art (Mowaa), a groundbreaking cultural institution aimed at reclaiming and preserving African heritage, has held its “hard hat opening,” ahead of its inaugural exhibition in May 2025. Inspired by the artistic legacy of the Benin Kingdom, Mowaa will feature cutting-edge facilities, including climate-controlled labs, galleries, and performance spaces across a 15-acre campus. The museum’s mission is to challenge stereotypes about Africa’s ability to manage its heritage. It has been touted as “among the best in the world for holding returned objects.” Despite its scale, Mowaa will not house returned Benin bronzes. Instead, it seeks to address infrastructural gaps hindering artifact restitution. Featuring exhibits like archaeological finds and historic treasures, Mowaa will provide a platform for African artists and researchers to reconnect with their cultural roots and promote public engagement with African heritage.
