South Sudan’s president, Salva Kiir, has dismissed the army chief, police chief, and central bank governor in a sudden leadership shake-up, according to an announcement by the state broadcaster SSBC. In the announcement, SSBC revealed that Paul Nang Majok has been appointed to replace General Santino Wol as the army chief amid reported unrest within the military over unpaid wages. The broadcaster also stated that Abraham Peter Manyuat becomes the new police inspector general, and Johnny Ohisa Damian returns as central bank governor, a post he previously held before his dismissal in 2023. While no reasons were given for the dismissals, the move follows rising instability, including a November gunfight in Juba during an attempt to arrest a former intelligence chief. South Sudan’s economy remains fragile, hampered by the aftermath of its 2013-2018 civil war and postponed elections until 2026.
