Kinshasa Requests N’djamena’s Help with Countering M23 Forces

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has formally requested military assistance from Chad to combat the Rwanda-backed M23 insurgency in its eastern region. According to a statement posted on President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno’s official Facebook page, Congo’s Minister of Regional Integration conveyed President Felix Tshisekedi’s plea in a meeting held this week. Although no final decision has been made, a Chadian official confirms ongoing deliberations on whether to deploy troops. Nevertheless, both Congolese and Chadian government spokespeople remain tight-lipped about the details of any potential military deployment. The M23 rebel group has captured significant territory since January, including the strategic cities of Goma and Bukavu.
