Non-profit organization Urban-Think Tank Empower has completed a transformative development in Khayelitsha, a South African township, showcasing a new approach to building in informal settlements. Located in the BT-Soweto area of Site C, the project provides 72 terraced homes for 428 residents, along with public spaces, a community center, and playgrounds. The Empower Upgrade model focuses on creating sustainable, community-centered solutions while addressing the limitations of traditional low-cost housing projects. The development aims to offer a financially and ecologically viable model for the ongoing growth of townships like Khayelitsha, which were historically shaped by apartheid policies.
