Protests, Police Brutality, and Political Turmoil Continue to Rock Mozambique

Mozambique’s political crisis deepened as the recent government-declared “Day of Dialogue” erupted into violent clashes between police and protesters. President Daniel Chapo, who signed an agreement with parliamentary parties to resolve post-election tensions, excluded opposition leader Venancio Mondlane from discussions. In response, Mondlane led a “peaceful walk” through Maputo’s poorer neighborhoods, which was met with police brutality, including the use of tear gas and live ammunition. At least 16 people, including children, were injured, and Mondlane has since disappeared from public view. Accusing the ruling FRELIMO party of election fraud, Mondlane plans daily protests and is working to launch a new opposition party, ANAMALALA, despite legal obstacles. If Mondlane succeeds, analysts suggest he could become a formidable challenger in Mozambique’s 2029 elections.
