The bill, introduced by UK MP Bambos Charalambous, seeks to prevent private creditors from suing during debt negotiations. Further, it aims to ensure fairer repayment terms. Africa’s reliance on loans has deepened since the COVID-19 pandemic, with countries like Zambia and Ghana struggling to manage debt repayments. The bill could provide essential relief, but the involvement of private creditors, including Chinese institutions, remains a challenge. Meanwhile, Africa’s leaders stress that debt relief is critical for social and economic stability.
