African EV Imports From China More Than Double

Demand for electric vehicles is rising sharply as countries seek alternatives to costly fuel imports amid global energy volatility linked to the Iran conflict. However, African demand for EVs had already been rising steadily. Chinese trade data shows African nations imported more than 44,000 EVs in 2025, more than double the 19,000 imported the previous year. Ethiopia accounted for roughly one-third of the imports after banning new gasoline and diesel vehicle imports in 2024, while Egypt, Morocco, and South Africa also accelerated EV adoption. Beyond environmental benefits, the transition offers vital economic relief; owners report spending just $4 per month on charging compared to $27 on fuel, providing a crucial buffer against global oil price volatility and supply chain disruptions.
