African gaming revenue hit a record $1.8 billion last year, growing six times faster than the global average, according to a report by Newzoo for Carry1st. The continent now boasts almost 350 million gamers—a 10% increase from 2023—driven by improved internet access, increased smartphone use, and a burgeoning youth population. According to Spencer Ma, growth director of Carry1st, Africa’s gaming market has transitioned from emerging to emerged, with key growth in Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Nigeria, and South Africa. Per the study, most of the $1.8 billion revenue was generated from mobile games through game purchases, in-game spending, and subscriptions. Despite macroeconomic challenges, including high inflation in Nigeria, the gaming sector remains robust, with Nigeria alone generating $300 million. However, underdeveloped telecom infrastructure and a cost-conscious consumer base still constrain adoption, and many games lack local cultural representation.
