Malian music legend Salif Keita, renowned as “The Golden Voice of Africa,” has released a new album titled So Kono, marking a significant return after his 2018 declaration that he would retire from recording. Contrary to his earlier statement, Keita found renewed inspiration during a stay at a Zen temple in Japan, leading to this introspective project. So Kono, meaning “In the House,” departs from his previous works by embracing a minimalist, acoustic approach. Recorded without his usual ensemble, the album features only occasional accompaniment from ngoni player Badié Tounkara and percussionist Mamadou Koné. This stripped-down setting allows Keita’s emotive vocals to take center stage, resulting in a tender and reflective collection of songs. The album’s intimate nature reflects Keita’s personal and spiritual journey, offering listeners a glimpse into his evolving artistry. So Kono stands as a testament to Keita’s enduring influence and his ability to reinvent his sound while staying true to his roots.
