A group of Beninese women artists is reshaping the country’s contemporary visual arts and reinventing the national narrative. Anne-Marie Akplogan is one of those at the forefront of this movement; her art combines local cultural references with an international style to examine collective identity and memory. Éliane Aïsso works across painting, photography, sculpture, and installation, using her art to explore spirituality and the human experience through both traditional and contemporary perspectives. Moufouli Bello uses photography and painting to portray women with dignity and authority, challenging stereotypical representations. Laeïla Adjovi, a researcher and artist, combines photography, sound, drawing, and storytelling to investigate migration, transatlantic exchange, and buried histories. Sènami Donoumassou, an emerging artist, explores memory, materials, and light through photograms, sound, video, and installation.
