Nigerian Designer Pursues Global Recognition for African Couture

By CNN·Edited by Editor TO·

Nigerian designer Mai Atafo is expanding the global profile of African fashion through bespoke tailoring, luxury bridal wear, and elaborate runway presentations. As chief creative officer of the ATAFO label, he hopes to establish his name alongside internationally renowned luxury houses. His designs have attracted prominent clients, including Mo Abudu, Tiwa Savage, and Banky Wellington, while supermodel Naomi Campbell’s appearance at his 2019 Lagos runway show further spotlighted his work. Atafo entered fashion after modifying store-bought clothes to fit his unusually long arms. He has since trained in Italy and earned tailoring certification from London’s Savile Row Academy. Preparing for another Lagos fashion show, he remains committed to proving African craftsmanship can compete globally.
