African Union Reinstates Gabon After Political Transition Assessment

2

The African Union has lifted its suspension of Gabon following a review of the country’s political transition. The organization suspended the country in 2023 after General Brice Oligui Nguema ousted President Ali Bongo in a coup that ended the Bongo family’s 55-year rule. Nguema pledged a two-year transition to civilian rule. Last month, the country held elections for the first time in two years, returning to civilian rule. Nguema contested in the elections and won with 94% of the vote. The AU’s Peace and Security Council deemed the transition process “generally successful,” paving the way for Gabon’s full return to the organization. Sanctions were lifted with immediate effect, and Gabon can once again participate in AU activities.
