Nigerian Farmers Can Now Talk to Their Crop Advisor — in Yoruba

Not a text message. Not a menu of buttons. A conversation, in Yoruba, about what’s wrong with your maize crop. That’s the new feature DataSync Africa launched this week on its agricultural platform AGROSYNC, aimed at the millions of Nigerian smallholder farmers for whom the biggest barrier to useful farming advice has never really been the information itself — it’s the format it comes in.

The new tool lets farmers ask questions by speaking rather than typing, receive spoken answers through the platform, and listen to agricultural advisories rather than read them — a shift the company says is aimed squarely at farmers who find typing cumbersome or simply prefer to receive important information in a language and format that feels familiar. Yoruba is the first local language AGROSYNC has rolled the voice feature out in, with Hausa and Igbo reportedly planned for future releases, a sequencing that would eventually put the tool within reach of Nigeria’s three largest linguistic groups.

AGROSYNC itself is DataSync Africa’s broader digital agriculture product, already offering tools like hyperlocal weather alerts, crop advisories, farm activity logging and pest identification from photos, aimed both at individual farmers and at food and beverage companies that need reliable farm-level and crop data for their supply chains. Jude ‘Feranmi, co-founder of DataSync Africa, has framed the voice launch as part of a broader mission to make sure agriculture — a sector employing more than 30% of Nigeria’s labour force — is not left behind by the wave of new technology reshaping other parts of the economy.

The problem AGROSYNC is chasing is a genuinely large one. Nigeria’s ratio of trained agricultural extension agents to farmers has long lagged far behind global recommendations, leaving many smallholders to make planting, pest-management and input decisions with limited access to expert guidance. Data collected on rural mobile phone usage across West Africa consistently shows high levels of phone ownership but comparatively low comfort with typed, text-heavy interfaces — particularly among older farmers and those with limited formal education — which is precisely the gap voice-first tools are designed to close.

Whether AGROSYNC’s Yoruba voice layer moves the needle at meaningful scale will depend on adoption in the field — rural connectivity, device costs and simple habit change all shape how quickly farmers actually incorporate a new digital tool into daily decision-making, regardless of how well-designed the underlying technology is. But the direction is notable: rather than assuming farmers will adapt to text-based tools built with urban, literate users in mind, DataSync Africa is building the interface around how farmers already communicate, in the language they already speak.

If the approach proves successful, it offers a template other agritech platforms across the continent — many of which face similar literacy and language barriers among their target users — may find hard to ignore.
