Cape Town Hosts Open-air Exhibition

By Visi·Edited by Editor TO·

The Mission for Inner City Cape Town has transformed an everyday commuter route into an unconventional showcase for African photography with the launch of “Alpha Street Gallery.” The free open-air exhibition occupies Alpha and Lower Loop Streets, a pedestrian corridor used by about 8,600 people each weekday. The project features two collections: “Unsung Heroes,” which highlights people sustaining African urban food systems and was developed from more than 180 competition entries, and “City in Motion,” a retrospective exploring six years of photography documenting changing African cities. Curators Ruby Schalit and Shani Judes see the project as a way to bring local stories directly into public life. Organizers hope the images encourage people to pause, explore, and reconnect with the city. By removing the traditional gallery walls, the exhibition makes African photography part of the daily experience of commuters, residents, and visitors.
