Japan Names ‘Hometowns’ for Nigerians and Other Africans in Bold Cultural Push

In an innovative move to strengthen ties with Africa, Japan has designated specific cities as “hometowns” for citizens from several African nations. This initiative, announced at the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD), aims to address Japan’s aging population by welcoming highly skilled Africans and artisans seeking training to the country. The city of Kisarazu, near Tokyo, has been named the official hub for Nigerians, building on a relationship forged when it hosted Nigeria’s Olympic team, while Tanzania, Ghana, and Mozambique are linked to Nagai, Sanjo, and Imabari, respectively. This creative form of cultural diplomacy is intended to foster people-to-people links and help revitalize Japanese municipalities facing population decline, marking a new chapter in Japan-Africa relations.
