Nairobi Collective Reimagines Africa through Art and Ecology

By DakArt News·Edited by Editor TO·

Nairobi-based Kairos Futura is challenging how African futures are imagined. For years, visions of the future have often arrived on the continent as finished models, whether from governments, tech firms, designers, or other sources. The collective seeks to change this by positioning Africans as active authors of future-making. The group blends art, design, technology, and ecology, using imagination as a practical tool. Rather than forecasting, it builds speculative environments, objects, and experiences that let people encounter possible futures and weigh what they might mean. One example, “The Wild Future Lab,” imagines what Nairobi would look like in 2045 if ecological systems, local materials, and indigenous knowledge became central to its evolution. Kairos Futura’s work seeks to respond to major issues confronting African cities, including climate change, rapid urbanization, technological development, and resource use.
