Van Alen Institute and the Pan-African Biennale have named Arafa C. Hamadi and the Bled el Abar Collective the two Africa-based winners of the 2026 Re:Paris Prize. Hamadi, a Tanzanian artist and spatial designer, will explore how exhibition design can move beyond Western museum conventions to reflect African material culture and storytelling. The Bled el Abar Collective, a Tunisia-based nonprofit founded by architects and a farmer, will study historic and contemporary sites of hospitality in the Sahara, including oases and wells, as spaces of resistance and cultural continuity. Both winners will present findings at Van Alen in 2027 and the next Biennale in 2028. The prize revives Van Alen’s century-old Paris Prize with a reparative, Global South focus.
