Zimbabwean Simbarashe Kundizeza Wins 2026 Caine Prize
Zimbabwean writer Simbarashe Steyn Kundizeza has won the 2026 Caine Prize for African Writing for his short story, “The Blue Fighter,” earning roughly $13,000. Kundizeza’s story, published in 2025, follows Tinashe, a young boy whose family faces financial hardship after his father abandons his profession to build fish tanks, leaving his mother to manage the fallout. Judges, chaired by journalist and broadcaster Bola Mosuro, praised the story’s emotional depth and exploration of family, denial, loyalty, and devotion. The story competed against a strong field in a year when the prize attracted a record 407 submissions from 27 African countries. Kundizeza, based in Harare, previously won the 2024 Island Prize for Debut African Fiction for his novel manuscript, “Freelance.” “The Blue Fighter,” alongside the four other stories that made the final shortlist, will appear in the 2026 Caine Prize anthology, “Felix Never Died and Other Stories.”
