Nigerian scientist showcases egusi seeds used in groundbreaking space research project.

Egusi, a beloved Nigerian melon seed, has made history with its first journey into space. Recently, the seeds from Oyo State in southwest Nigeria launched aboard SpaceX Crew-11 as part of a NASA-backed research mission to the International Space Station. Led by 2021 FORBES AFRICA 30 Under 30 honoree Dr. Temidayo Oniosun, the project explores how culturally significant crops, including Egyptian cotton and Pakistani wheat, behave in microgravity. Researchers at the University of Florida and Nigeria’s International Institute of Tropical Agriculture will study the seeds’ genetic stability and resilience, potentially shaping future space agriculture. Oniosun hopes the mission inspires Africans to see space as within reach, connecting tradition to future space exploration and even lunar farming.
