Rural South Africans See Progress as a Partnership

In rural South Africa, the idea of progress isn’t a choice between “modern development,” meaning the provision of basic services and better living conditions, and Indigenous wisdom—it’s a marriage of both. Interviews in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape reveal that communities value infrastructure, jobs, and services just as much as they treasure Ubuntu, the ethic of care, compassion, and mutual support captured in the phrase “a person is a person through other people.” Residents see the two as intertwined: development thrives when driven by Ubuntu, ensuring no one is left behind. This perspective challenges calls to abandon development for cultural traditions alone, suggesting instead that blending global progress with local values may be the most powerful way to build better futures.
