A museum dedicated to Moroccan Jewish heritage has opened in Fez’s old Jewish quarter, highlighting the community’s long history and its contribution to the city. Fez, a center of culture and learning since the ninth century, was shaped by Jewish, Arab, Amazigh, Spanish, and French influences, and organizers say the museum highlights that shared history and peaceful coexistence. One rabbi said the displays show Jews lived in Morocco on good terms with Muslim neighbors. The permanent exhibition spans two floors: one traces more than 2,500 years of Jewish presence in Morocco, and the other explores community institutions, including synagogues, Hebrew schools, and rabbinical courts. Displays include clothing, jewelry, musical instruments, artworks, manuscripts, and archival material. The opening comes as Morocco’s Jewish population has fallen to about 2,500 following major emigration during the 20th century.
