New Accra Space Aims to Preserve Ghana’s Heritage

Si Hene, a new membership-based cultural center dedicated to preserving and engaging with Ghanaian history and heritage, is set to open in Accra, Ghana, this October. Billed as the capital’s first space of its kind, Si Hene will launch during Accra Cultural Week, which will begin on October 29. The space will provide members with access to a cultural reference library and an archive lab containing decades-old photographs, newspapers, textiles, and rare first-edition books on Ghanaian and diasporan history. Si Hene members will also be able to access academic resources and research through an online portal. The center’s membership model is organized into tiers—young custodians, custodians, and elder custodians—and is designed to reduce reliance on grants and government funding.
