Ugandan Initiative Digitizes Indigenous Heritage

Uganda’s Ndere Cultural Center has launched a digitization initiative aimed at preserving indigenous knowledge before it fades from living memory. The project will record information held by elderly Ugandans, who are regarded as important custodians of traditions at risk of disappearing. The archive will cover languages, music, dance, food, customs, and other cultural practices, after which it will be organized into a searchable digital collection. Ndere plans to transform the archive into educational resources for schools, cultural clubs, and researchers. Pupils will also participate in an annual Cultural Digitization and Musicality Festival, where they can learn and perform elements of Uganda’s heritage. Ndere says the initiative could eventually support cultural education, tourism, and creative industries while preserving traditions for future generations.
