Tigran Gambaryan, an American staff member of Binance, has been detained in Nigeria for nearly six months over charges related to money laundering. According to his family, he urgently requires surgery on a herniated disk in his back or he will no longer be able to walk. Gambaryan’s family also stated that he needs surgery to remove his tonsils, claiming he contracted multiple pneumonia infections in prison. They further revealed he’s been denied access to his lawyers since July 26 and that the Nigerian Correctional Service has withheld his medical records. Gambaryan was initially arrested in April while on a work trip to Nigeria, and despite one charge being dropped, he remains in custody awaiting trial on a money laundering charge. US Congress members have called for his release, with some suggesting that Nigerian officials are using the case as part of an extortion scheme against Binance.
