DR Congo Moves to Strip Kabila of Immunity Over War Crimes Allegations

6

The Democratic Republic of Congo is moving to strip former President Joseph Kabila of his legal immunity amid accusations he supports the M23 rebel group, which recently took control of parts of the country’s mineral-rich east. Justice Minister Constant Mutamba cited a “substantial body” of evidence linking Kabila to the insurgents. Kabila, who ruled for 18 years, has not responded to the latest claims but has previously denied any rebel ties. He currently holds the title of “senator for life,” which confers upon him immunity from prosecution. Meanwhile, the DRC is edging closer to a resolution. Last week, it signed an agreement with Rwanda, which allegedly supports the rebels, to come up with a draft proposal for ending the conflict.
