Egypt’s Giza Pyramid Restoration Sparks Debate Among Experts and Public

3

Egypt’s plan to restore the Menkaure Pyramid at Giza using granite cladding has ignited controversy among archaeologists and conservationists. The project, led by the Supreme Council of Antiquities, aims to reapply granite blocks to the pyramid’s exterior, some of which are unpolished and believed to be leftover from construction. Critics argue that this approach violates international conservation standards, as outlined in the 1964 Venice Charter, which emphasizes minimal intervention and respect for original materials. In response to public outcry, the Ministry of Antiquities has established a review committee, chaired by renowned Egyptologist Zahi Hawass, to assess the project’s feasibility and adherence to preservation principles.
