Burkina Faso’s Deaf Dancers Feel Music Through Vibrations

By AP·Edited by Editor TO·

In Burkina Faso, choreographer Yaya Sanou has developed Vibra-Signe, a method that lets deaf and non-verbal dancers follow music without hearing it. Performers dance barefoot on a rubber-covered stage and feel percussion through the floor, while taps, signs, gestures, and facial expressions convey tempo and mood. Sanou founded the Fientan dance company a decade ago after noticing deaf schoolchildren rarely socialized; its name means “without disability” in Dioula. The company has since gained recognition at home and abroad, winning a gold medal for dance creation at the 2023 Francophone Games in Kinshasa. Beyond artistic achievement, the project promotes inclusion, confidence, and social connection in a country where resources and support for people with hearing disabilities remain limited.
