The Confederation of African Football has reversed its plan to stage the Africa Cup of Nations every four years, retaining the tournament’s traditional biennial schedule. President Patrice Motsepe said the decision would better protect and advance African football, following concerns from national associations about the proposed change. The original plan, announced ahead of the 2025 tournament, was intended to align the competition more closely with the international football calendar and reduce scheduling conflicts with European clubs. However, AFCON remains CAF’s biggest revenue source, with the 2025 edition projected to generate a $114 million profit, compared with $75 million in 2023. An alternative Africa Nations League was proposed, but doubts about its commercial viability contributed to the reversal.
