A Johannesburg circus program is helping young performers from impoverished townships turn artistic talent into professional opportunities. Among them is Brian Ngobese, who grew up in Alexandra township and moved from street and contemporary dance into the circus after a 2019 audition. Training through Jozi Circus School eventually led him to The Cirk, where he now performs professionally. The program provides pathways into paid circus work, teaching, and production opportunities. Organizers say the program, designed to be sustainable through performances and training revenue, reflects the country’s rich cultural diversity through circus artistry. Though limited in capacity, the initiative’s founders see Johannesburg as a launchpad for developing world-class circus talent across the continent.
