Eliud Kipchoge Sets Melbourne Marathon Record

By BBC·Edited by Editor TO·

Kenyan marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge has set a course record at the Melbourne Marathon, winning in 2:09:10. The victory marked the 41-year-old, two-time Olympic champion’s 17th career marathon win and his first since the 2023 Berlin Marathon. The race featured sections of Melbourne’s Albert Park Formula One circuit before finishing inside the Melbourne Cricket Ground, where Kipchoge slowed to acknowledge cheering spectators. Australia’s Thomas do Canto finished second in 2:10:35, followed by compatriot Reece Edwards. Melbourne was the third stop on Kipchoge’s planned two-year global marathon tour, which aims to cover all seven continents, including Antarctica. Proceeds from the races will support the Eliud Kipchoge Foundation’s work in education, environmental sustainability, and health.
