Nine years after its Off-Broadway debut, School Girls; or, The African Mean Girls Play is heading to Broadway this fall, marking a major milestone for playwright Jocelyn Bioh. Set in a Ghanaian boarding school in 1986, the lively comedy follows a group of teenage girls competing for a chance to represent their country in a beauty pageant. The Manhattan Theater Club production promises a fresh take on teen cliques that initially wowed critics for its wit and cultural depth. The production will open Sept. 8 at the Samuel J. Friedman Theater, directed by Whitney White, who previously collaborated with Bioh on the Tony-nominated Jaja’s African Hair Braiding. After more than 75 stagings in the US and Britain, the show’s Broadway arrival highlights its growing influence and promises to be a standout of the season.
