Inside Johannesburg’s Grassroots Music Venue Revival

By Okay Africa·Edited by Editor TO·

Johannesburg’s independent music venues are sustaining the city’s nightlife and providing crucial infrastructure for artists despite economic and post-pandemic pressures. One key address is 81 De Korte Street, once home to the Puma Social Club and jazz venue The Orbit, two venues that helped shape the city’s creative scene. Now, the site is home to Your Weekly Touch Up, a weekly institution built around free performances and artist collaborations, which has now run for 150 weeks across three venues. In Newtown, Niki’s Oasis has remained a platform for established and emerging musicians since 1995 and was recognized in 2026 with a Music Cities Award for Best Placemaking Initiative. The Afrikan Freedom Station has also created a permanent space for young artists. Organizers argue these spaces function as essential public infrastructure, sustaining South Africa’s music ecosystem despite limited government recognition and funding.
