Johannesburg, Accra Rank Among World’s Top Nightlife Cities

Johannesburg and Accra have been named among the world’s 20 best nightlife destinations for 2026, according to Time Out. Johannesburg ranked seventh globally, making it Africa’s highest-ranked city, while Accra came in 18th. The ranking drew on responses from more than 24,000 locals alongside assessments from Time Out editors, culture experts, and nightlife specialists. Factors included affordability, safety, community, diversity, excitement, and the quality of bars, clubs, and live-music venues. Johannesburg received praise for reinventing its scene from historic warehouse parties to venues built around house, techno, Afro-house, gqom, drum and bass, and experimental music. For Accra, the city’s nightlife spans Osu and the emerging East Legon area, which offer everything from Afrobeats to alté and electronic music.
