Kenya’s Wanyonyi Shatters 1,000-meter World Record

Kenya’s Emmanuel Wanyonyi set a new world record in the men’s 1,000 meters at the Monaco Diamond League, finishing in 2:11.83. The time bested the previous record, held by fellow Kenyan Noah Ngeny for 27 years, by 0.13 seconds. Wanyonyi, the reigning 800m Olympic champion, finished nearly a full second ahead of Britain’s Jake Wightman, with Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati taking third. Wanyonyi said he was delighted to break the record in his first attempt at the rarely contested distance, crediting his rivals for pushing him to his limit. Although the 1,000 meters is not included in the Olympic Games or World Athletics Championships, the record-breaking performance further cements the Kenyan star’s status as one of the world’s leading middle-distance runners and adds another milestone to his rapidly growing career.
