Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed arrived in Mogadishu on Thursday, February 27, 2025, in a key effort to ease tensions with Somalia. Welcomed by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the trip marks a fresh chapter after last year’s fallout over Ethiopia’s controversial deal with Somaliland. The agreement, which granted Ethiopia sea access in exchange for recognizing Somaliland’s independence, had strained relations, with Somalia claiming it infringes on its territory. The leaders, who previously met in Turkey in December to set the stage for technical talks, are now discussing a range of bilateral issues from trade to security. Mohamud had, in January, visited Addis Ababa, leading experts to believe that Abiy’s reciprocal trip signals a renewed commitment to regional stability and cooperation.
