Rasool was declared persona non grata by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio following his critical remarks about Donald Trump’s foreign policy during a webinar. Rasool defended his comments, clarifying that his remarks were an analysis of a political phenomenon – not of a personality, nation, or government. He emphasized the need for an ambassador to restore Pretoria’s relationship with Washington but stressed that it must not come at the expense of South Africa’s dignity and sovereignty.
