South Africa and Rwanda are both vying to host Formula 1 races, emphasizing Africa’s potential to accommodate multiple Grand Prix events. South Africa, aiming to return to the F1 calendar after hosting its last race in 1993, plans to revamp the Kyalami circuit and target a 2027 debut. Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie criticized the notion that Africa can only host one race, highlighting South Africa’s history of hosting global events like the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Meanwhile, Rwanda, following its recent hosting of the FIA General Assembly in Kigali, is actively engaging Formula 1 officials. The country has heavily invested in sports infrastructure to boost tourism and revenue. Rwanda’s Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe echoed the sentiment of inclusivity, asserting that both nations could successfully host F1 events without competition.
