South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has described the violence targeting women as a “national shame” after nine women were killed in Ekurhuleni in recent months.

Addressing Heritage Day celebrations in the Western Cape on Thursday, Ramaphosa said violence, rape and the killing of women had no place in South Africa’s heritage. The president’s comments come amid growing concern over women’s safety following the deaths of nine women whose bodies were discovered across Ekurhuleni between July and September. Police have launched a specialised investigation into the killings.
Ramaphosa said the government would soon update the public on measures to address gender-based violence and the investigations into the killings. Two women have reportedly been charged over one of the deaths, but police have not established a connection between them and the other eight cases. Heritage Day, a public holiday since 1995, was celebrated this year under the theme “Celebrating Our Living Heritage: Strengthening the Ties That Bind Us”.
