South Sudan’s deputy president, Riek Machar, has warned that a recent cabinet reshuffle by President Salva Kiir endangers the 2018 peace agreement. Earlier this week, Kiir’s government announced the firing of several senior officials—including Health Minister Yolanda Awel Deng, Gen. Alfred Futuyo Karaba, two vice presidents, and the spy chief. According to Machar, this unilateral dismissal violates the power-sharing deal that ended years of civil war. Machar, who returned to Juba with the title of first vice president under the agreement, insists that these actions undermine the established framework designed to balance power among South Sudan’s five vice presidents. With critical reforms still pending and presidential elections delayed until 2026, these unilateral moves raise serious concerns about the future implementation of the peace accord.
