France officials have begun an investigation of TotalEnergies that aims to prove whether the energy giant is complicit in the attack on its facilities in Mozambique in 2021. Planned and executed by Islamic militants, the attack resulted in the death of a large number of people. France’s decision to open an investigation into the energy giant is influenced by a legal complaint filed by survivors of the attack as well as relatives of its victims that accuses the company of falling short in its responsibility to protect subcontractors as well as in the evacuation of the facilities. The company has since denied the accusations.
