Gabon court jails former first lady and son

Sylvia Bongo Ondimba and Noureddin Bongo Valentin, the wife and son of Gabon’s former president, have been sentenced to 20 years in prison and fined $176,000. A special criminal court found them guilty on a sweeping list of corruption charges, including embezzlement of public funds, forgery, criminal conspiracy, and money laundering. Prosecutors successfully argued that they operated a system designed to capture state money for private gain. The pair, who were tried in absentia, have vehemently denied the accusations, labeling the proceedings a political witch hunt. This dramatic verdict signals a powerful effort to dismantle the legacy of the Bongo dynasty, which ruled for over five decades.
