Gabon Deliberates Over Future Constitution Ahead of September Deadline

Gabon’s parliamentarians are finalizing proposed amendments to the country’s future constitution ahead of a September 22 deadline. The draft was submitted to transitional president General Brice Oligui Nguema after a year of military rule following the ousting of President Ali Bongo, whose family governed Gabon for over 50 years. Meanwhile, civil society groups are advocating for key changes, including reducing the presidential term from seven to five years and eliminating restrictive eligibility rules for presidential candidates. They also seek to abolish the vice presidency and to clarify the criteria for removing a president. Some political stakeholders have commented on the bill. Presidential candidate Daniel Mengara has criticized the draft for promoting hyper-presidentialism. Mengara advocates for a return to the parliamentary system to ensure a balance of power. Despite the consultations, the ruling military will make the final decision on the constitution, with a referendum expected before the end of the year.
