Ghana’s Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill Resurfaces Despite Court Order

Ghana’s Parliament has resubmitted a controversial anti-LGBTQ+ bill to President Nana Akufo-Addo for final approval, despite awaiting a Supreme Court ruling on its constitutionality. The proposed legislation would impose up to three years in prison for people who identify as LGBTQ and up to five years for those who support LGBTQ+ activities. Alban Bagbin, Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, pushed for the bill’s resubmission. He criticized the president and judiciary for delaying the bill’s progress, accusing them of violating constitutional duties. The bill has spurred widespread criticism from international organizations, with Amnesty International and the US strongly condemning it. If enacted, the legislation could jeopardize Ghana’s economy by risking $3.8 billion in World Bank financing over the next five to six years.
