Guinea Faces Protests as Junta Misses Deadline for Democratic Transition

Protests erupted in Guinea’s capital after the ruling junta missed its deadline for initiating a democratic transition, sparking domestic and international criticism. Col. Mamadi Doumbouya, in power since a 2021 coup, had pledged a return to civilian rule by December 31, 2024. However, in his New Year’s address, Doumbouya only promised a decree for a constitutional referendum without setting clear timelines, which opposition groups condemned as a delay tactic. The Forces Vives de Guinée coalition accused the junta of stalling in a bid to prolong military rule. The body then called for citizens to stay indoors in protests, following the fatal shooting of one man and numerous arrests. Authorities have yet to respond to the latest unrest. Beyond the junta’s refusal to schedule elections, there are concerns about the credibility of elections, especially after the junta dissolved over 50 political parties last year and increased restrictions on independent media.
